Great technology - but I dont want it....

A company called Ambient gave a live demo a cool device called the Audeo which enables "voiceless communication". The device is targeted at people who’ve lost the ability to speak due to disorders such as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, cerebral palsy, or Parkinson’s so is potentially very worthy and useful.

They clearly have not optimised the device so there is a very significant pause before the speech is synthesised. My theory on this is that in the demo they are filtering out the flotsam and jetsam of the presenter's thoughts like "Damn - hope this works this time - cos if it doesnt this is going to look really stupid..."

The device seems to be designed to pick up only "voluntary" speech which is a good thing because if they picked up all thoughts you would never be able to converse with members of the opposite sex, your boss and lots of your customers as it could make you like Jim Carrey in Liar Liar or give you advanced Tourette's syndrome++.

I dont think I will take the chance...
